The Kirkcaldy turns provided most of the ‘spectacle’ for August and September, after a very quiet period for Class 26s on passenger trains, especially on the East Coast. 26001+26006 on a local Aberdeen service was probably the most outrageous working of the year, although a pair did also come out of Inverness to Glasgow.

  1. Hello. Back in May 1984, I had 26038+26032 Inverness to Wick and return on the first service out of Inverness. After that, (i think) we took another 26 to Garve, for another 26 back. I think these were 26034 & 26035.My mate and I also had a ride in the cab as the 26’s ran round the stock at Wick, then another cab ride from Inverness into the depot. Not bad for a 13 yr old ‘spotter from Durham who should’ve been at school.
    I can’t for the life of me remember the exact dates, but I remember ScotRail had a special offer – go anywhere for £8 return.
