1990

Plenty of 26s came to the rescue of ailing 47s (and some worked over the Highland Main Line); there were some sporadic turns out of Perth/Dundee, and some truly outrageous workings from Ayr, Glasgow and Carlisle…
Saturday 20/01/90
26040
0925 Aberdeen to Queen Street; working from Dundee to Aberdeen. 47710 blew up at Dundee and 26040 was the AL22 trip engine.

Saturday 27/01/90
26037
0850 1C67 Waverley to Manchester Piccadilly; from Waverley to Carstairs.

Saturday 10/02/90
26040
1M42 Inverness to Euston; from Perth to Waverley. The duff Duff was detached at Perth and 040 continued to Waverley with the load 9 Clansman.

Monday 12/02/90
26011
1400 Glasgow Central to Euston; from Central to Carstairs.

26021
1750 Glasgow Central to Manchester; from Central to Carstairs. The wires were down from Central to Carstairs; it’s possible more trains were Class 26-hauled…

Tuesday 13/02/90
26026
2100 1Y11 Euston to Fort William; from Glasgow Central to Dumbarton Central, via Rutherglen West to North and Glasgow Central low level. The tractor had burst at Central, so 26026 came off Polmadie. As 26026 was taking the train through this pretty huge route for a Type Two, a T was coming off Eastfield and running light to Dumbarton to replace 26026.

Tuesday 20/02/90
26010
0702 1A49 Plymouth to Aberdeen; from Inverkeithing to Dundee. 47559 was on the train, but burst at Inverkeithing. The train was caped at Dundee, probably owing to the fact that it was a mere 247 minutes late by that point, having earlier been routed via the S&C!

Saturday 24/02/90
26007
0634 1E09 Carlisle to Leeds and 1045 1M43 Leeds to Carlisle; piloting 47443 on both turns.

Tuesday 27/02/90
26041
1035 1S59 Euston to Inverness; from Larbert Junction to Stirling. 47460 was the train engine to Larbert where it failed. The train was pushed by 26041 to Stirling and caped.

Saturday 10/03/90
26041
0630 Carlisle to Newcastle; 0902 Newcastle to Carlisle. 26041 dragged a dead DMU to Newcastle on the 0630, then took it to Heaton to swap this for a rake of Mk1s, which it pulled on the 0902.

Monday 13/03/90
26025
1333 1H13 Queen Street to Inverness; from Stirling to Perth. 47642 burst. The train was caped at Perth.

Sunday 18/03/90
26043
0910 Aberdeen to Queen Street; from Dunblane to Queen Street. 47708 blew up at Perth and a just-off-repairs 47562 replaced it and then failed at Dunblane. 26043 took the train in.

Wednesday 21/03/90
26026
1510 Aberdeen to Queen Street; from Perth to Queen Street.

Thursday 29/03/90
26025
1L51 Queen Street to Dundee; from Larbert to Perth. 47716 failed at Larbert, so 26025 came off Grangemouth. The train was caped at Perth and the normals forwarded on a DMU.

Wednesday 11/04/90
26041
1445 Carlisle to Barrow; 1752 Barrow to Carlisle

Friday 13/04/90
26015
1522 Perth to Dundee; 1625 Dundee to Arbroath; 1715 Arbroath to Perth. Dragging a DMU throughout.

Saturday 14/04/90
26001+26005
0500 1Z36 Swindon to Dundee; 1643 1Z36 Dundee to Swindon; from Waverley to Dundee and Dundee to Markinch. This was a NEDEX, with the Teacups booked Waverley to Dundee via Cardenden out and back via Kirkcaldy. However, 26005’s TM was smoking on the return trip and the train was stopped for two hours at Markinch for 47822 to come and take over.

Monday 14/05/90
26025
Worked Carlisle to Leeds Neville Hill ECS. 26025 was then supposed to return to Carlisle with a 31/4, but Control sent it back light engine instead. Although 26s were no longer required at Carlisle for trips weekdays, the 1818 WO Sellafield and 1818 FO Torness nuke trains were booked a 26 off Ayr; and there was still a ballast turn at weekends.

Friday 25/05/90
26014
1712 2Y74 Dundee to Montrose; 1808 2Y46 Montrose to Perth. Unfortunately, as 26014 was in a state, the outward turn was caped at Arbroath, where 014 ran round and worked the return to Perth.

Sunday 03/06/90
26035
12xx Ayr to Glasgow Central; xxxx Glasgow Central to Kilwinning; xxxx Kilwinning to Glasgow Central. There were three control reliefs along the Ayrshire coast. 26035 was also meant to run the 2030 Ayr relief, but a can was sent instead.

Monday 04/06/90
26014
1712 2Y74 Dundee to Montrose; 1808 2Y46 Montrose to Perth.

Wednesday 06/06/90
26015
2350 Euston to Glasgow Central; from Polmadie to the blocks. 90020 had expired at Polmadie, so 015 dragged the schlafs to Central.

26039
0722 1J06 Dundee to Waverley. 26039 ran light from Thornton to Perth for the stock, then ECS to Dundee to form the train it worked to Edinburgh.

Friday 08/06/90
26041
1530 Glasgow Central to Waverley; from Holytown to Waverley. The 101 had burst, so 041 ran light from Motherwell and the whole ensemble arrived about an hour late.

Saturday 09/06/90
26035
1040 1Z94 Ayr to Carlisle; 1400 1Z94 Carlisle to Ayr. There were no Ts at Ayr, so 035 came to the rescue.

Wednesday 13/06/90
26039
1712 2Y74 Dundee to Montrose; 1808 2Y46 Montrose to Perth. A bit of Type Two relief after 37s 087, 152, 154, 170 and 240 had been dominating the turn.

Saturday 16/06/90
26041
2050 1C63 Fort William to Euston; from Glasgow Central to Carstairs. The wires were down, so 041 dragged the Fort Bill portion of the Inverness to Euston.

Monday 02/07/90
26014
1355 1H13 Queen Street to Inverness; from Queen Street to Perth. After some riots at Queen Street, the train left 25 late, with, believe it or not, 26038 banking! 26014 was some 50 down by Perth, so, although allocated throughout, it came off at Perth (as per usual with single Type Twos!) The train was combined with the 1440 ex Waverley and the Joe went forward.

Friday 06/07/90
26042
0722 1M22 Waverley to Birmingham New Street; from Waverley to Carstairs.

8/7/1990
26025 + 26024 + 26036 all employed on pilot duties at Glasgow Central, owing to overhead line problems at Penrith and a shortage of electric locos in Glasgow

Monday 09/07/90

Thursday 02/08/90
26010
1712 2Y74 Dundee to Montrose; 1808 2Y46 Montrose to Perth. The first time a 26 had dropped for 7 weeks!

1833 Ayr to Glasgow Central

Friday 03/08/90
26011+26005
1210 1Z12 Glasgow Central to Ayr

26010
1712 2A74 Dundee to Montrose; 1808 2Y74 Montrose to Perth.

Tuesday 07/08/90
26035
1712 2Y74 Dundee to Montrose; 1808 2Y46 Montrose to Perth. The driver didn’t sign Class 26s on the crew change at Dundee on the 1808; this, however, didn’t stop him winding 26035 up to 82mph between Errol and Perth!

Wednesday 08/08/90
26035
0755 1H07 Waverley to Inverness; from Aviemore to Inverness. 47712 caught fire at Aviemore, so 26035 came off the Perth ballast, removed the shove duff and continued to Inverness.

There was a multi fault, so the load 9 train was driven in tandem non-stop to Carlisle, departing Central at 1141 and arriving Carlisle at 1356. They returned light to Polmadie.

Monday 17/12/90
26032
1724 1Z72 Carlisle to Dumfries; Carlisle to Dumfries. Returned 5M00 to Carlisle. As 156s had been banned owing to track circuit problems at Annan, a shuttle service operated for a few weeks with Class 31s, DMUs, and, in this case, 26032. It may have worked other trains.
